Title

Principal Stephen G. Kurtz with the Ship Weathervane on top of the Academy Building

Description

An image of Principal Stephen G. Kurtz with the ship weathervane on top of the Academy Building, which opened in 1914. Given by an anonymous donor, the ship is inscribed/named “Sidney S,” a reference to Sidney Smith, the president of the Board of Trustees at the time the gift was made. According to Myron Williams in his 1957 book "The Story of Philips Exeter," the ship is a reference to the official arms of the State of New Hampshire; it also is an appropriate recognition of Exeter's former role as a mercantile seaport and shipbuilding center.
